There are a few advantages of popping into a local tyre garage to get your pressures check. One is that we can do a full safety check of all your tyres, ensuring you are not on the legal limit and your tyres are safe. In addition, most (I would hope all) tyre garages calibrate their machines, whereas the pumps on most petrol garage forecourts are often scarily inaccurate - I certainly wouldn't rely on one! On top of the inaccurate reading you are getting you have to pay for it!
The mail online recently wrote an article on Tesco’s, claiming they have more than doubled their charges for air to pump up tyres from 20p to 50p!
There are three main reasons why maintaining the correct tyre pressures are important for your car.
Safety – tyres that are underinflated can overheat, and over inflated can lead to poor vehicle handling
Economy – Over or under inflated tyres can have a decreased contact patch with the road and suffer from uneven tyre wear. Over inflated tyres mean you will wear the tread more quickly due to the smaller contact patch, and therefore need to fork out for new tyres more regularly.
Environment – Correct tyre pressures help maintain fuel efficiency and can equate to lower CO2 emissions coming from your vehicle.
Main vehicle manufacturers suggest different tyre pressures for your front and rear tyres so have a flick through your handbook or alternatively look in the sill of the driver’s door or on the inside of the fuel flap. If you are still stumped, give us a call and we can advise you!
